Kristie Holt and Krishleen Kaur Kohli of the US Behavioral Science team showcased a poster at the Nudges in Healthcare Symposium 2024, hosted by the Nudge Unit at the Center for Healthcare Innovation, Penn Medicine. We demonstrated our behavioral science expertise in enhancing program retention for a patient support program for Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH).

We used a unique 2-way SMS communication intervention that involved crafting short messages embedded with Behavior Change Techniques. Each message nudged users to engage with tailored content aimed at reframing illness perceptions, and improving disease understanding and offered a script for discussing IH with others.

The intervention not only boosted engagement within the SMS channel and overall program retention but also led to a positive spillover effect—increasing email open rates.

Attendees at the symposium recognized the significant value of our work in driving behavior change through a person-centered approach, emphasizing a deep understanding of the pain points and unique needs of people living with rare diseases.
